But there is another factor that receives far less attention, despite influencing every application &#8211; whether the herbicide works as intended in the first place.<\/p><p>And that factor is water.<\/p><h2>First, let\u2019s understand the relationship between herbicide, water and adjuvants<\/h2><p>Before getting into the science behind this relationship, it\u2019s helpful to break this down into simple terms.<\/p><p>When you spray a herbicide, that\u2019s your tool for controlling weeds. It\u2019s doing the heavy lifting in the field.<\/p><p>The water in the tank is what carries that herbicide to the plant. But not all water is equal. In many parts of the Mid-West, water contains minerals like calcium and magnesium. These can tie up the herbicide in the tank, meaning less of it is available to do its job once it reaches the weed.<\/p><p>An adjuvant is there to manage that. It conditions the water so the herbicide stays available and works the way it\u2019s supposed to. In simple terms, it helps ensure you\u2019re getting the performance you paid for.<\/p><p>So if you step back and look at the whole system:<\/p><ul><li>The herbicide controls the weeds<\/li><li>The water carries it<\/li><li>The adjuvant helps the herbicide work as intended<br \/><br \/><\/li><\/ul><p>Each one plays a different role, but together they determine how effective the application is in the field.<\/p><h2>Where and how herbicide performance is lost<\/h2><p>Once you understand the relationship between herbicide and water, the next question is how often performance is actually being affected.<\/p><p>In many farming regions, water hardness is not the exception, it is a constant. Calcium, magnesium, iron and other cations are present at levels that can interfere with herbicide performance, particularly with widely used actives like glyphosate. This does not always show up as a complete failure. More often, it appears as reduced speed of control, uneven kill, or patches of survivors that are easy to overlook in the moment.<\/p><p>Over time, these small inefficiencies add up. What should be a clean pass becomes a partially effective one, and what should be controlled in a single application sometimes requires follow-up. That gap between expected performance and actual outcome is where growers lose value.<\/p><p>More importantly, it is where resistance begins to build. When herbicides are tied up in the spray solution, the effective dose reaching the weed is lower than intended, creating inconsistency in control. Some weeds are eliminated, others are only partially affected, and some survive. Those survivors are the starting point for resistance. Repeated over time, this creates selection pressure, allowing more tolerant weeds to persist and multiply. In this sense, resistance is not only driven by what is applied, but by how well each application performs. If performance is consistently compromised, even slightly, the system is moving in the wrong direction.<\/p><h2>How adjuvants solve for this<\/h2><p>Adjuvants address this problem at a chemical level by managing what happens in the spray solution before it ever reaches the plant.<\/p><p>In hard water, positively charged cations like calcium and magnesium bind to negatively charged herbicide molecules such as glyphosate, forming complexes that are less soluble and less readily absorbed by the leaf. This reduces the amount of active ingredient that can penetrate the plant and move to its site of action.<\/p><p>Water conditioning adjuvants work by sequestering or neutralising these cations, effectively removing them from the equation so the herbicide remains in its active, available form. Many also help stabilise pH and improve droplet behaviour on the leaf surface, supporting better coverage and uptake.
